Activities with an 82 year old

What kind of activities do you plan when you have an 82 year old on board? It certainly depends on the 82 year old! Our choice was to look at the trail map, pick a strenuous 5 mile hike, and go for it.

My mother, Jane, is our first overnight visitor on board Rhapsody.  We picked her up from the ferry dock at Cruz Bay on St. John's and the next day motored to the South side of St. John's.  St. John's is the second largest island in the USVI and is 90% National Park, which translates to few houses, hotels, touristy things, and more hiking trails.
The trail that we picked left from the bay we moored at, Great Leinster Bay, traveled across to Little Leinster Bay, and then up and over the side of St. John's. The ultimate destination was The Petroglyphs. A small waterfall and pool with petroglyphs carved into the rocks. Apparently it was quite a sacred spot for the early inhabitants. Today it is a draw for the tourists.
Fortunately there is no commercialism attached to it, and you still have to hike a ways to get there. For us the joy was the hike there and back. Through the jungle and over the ridges. Birds singing in the treetops. Wonderful lacy remnents of leaves and huge round termite nests in the trees.

From the poem Ithaca.
Ithaca has given you the beautiful voyage.
Without her you would never have taken the road.
But she has nothing more to give you.

We love to hear your comments.
